Reaching REACH Compliance
By now, you're probably familiar with RoHS Compliance. But are you aware of the implications of
the European Union's (EU) newer initiative, REACH? REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization,
and Restriction of Chemicals, and it's taking a serious look at many potentially harmful substances
that are used in manufacturing.
REACH will affect any manufacturer who does business with European markets, either import or export, and
could eventually lead to the banning of as many as 3,000 chemicals. Specifically, this directive targets
what's known as SVHCs - Substances of Very High Concern, including CMRs. The primary list of restricted
substances, released in October 2008, contains 15 items, but is expected to grow considerably in the years
to come. Click here for the first list.
This means that manufacturers must carefully inspect any substances that are used in or released by their
products and the products of their suppliers and customers. Failure to comply with REACH standards can
result in your product being banned from sale in Europe.
In designing REACH, the EU is hoping to standardize into one directive all of the currently separate
regulations that exist across the continent. It is also placing the responsibility of product safety, both
for health and the environment, on individual manufacturers.
What can you do? To start, take stock of all of the substances and chemicals used in your company's production
process and determine which ones, if any, are potentially hazardous. Begin to research and consider alternatives
if necessary, and keep an eye on the continually-updating list of banned substances. If you use a chemical that
isn't yet restricted but is questionable, it will probably find its way to the banned list in the future.
As always, Allied Wire will help by providing our customers with relevant information and by stocking only the
highest-quality products. Click for more detailed information about REACH.
