You may have seen in our catalog or on our website that some of our products come in a Plenum version.
Maybe you've been asked to purchase Plenum cable, but you weren't really sure what Plenum was. What is
Plenum? Plenum refers to products that can legally be installed in the specific space in a building that
is used to store HVAC and wire and cable.
Products that will be installed in the plenum space must adhere to certain fire code requirements.
The Plenum Space is the area that is used for air circulation of heating and air conditioning systems,
usually located between the structural and suspended ceiling or under a raised floor. Generally,
anything installed in the Plenum Space must not burn easily and must not emit toxic fumes if exposed
to extreme heat.
To achieve these requirements, Plenum products are coated with a flame-retardant material such as ETFE
or PVC, so that in the event of a fire, it will not emit toxic fumes and smoke as it burns. In certain
areas, plenum cable is required by law in new construction. Because of this and other requirements, Plenum
wire and cable tends to be more expensive than non-plenum products.
Plenum versions are available for Communication Cables (
Category Level 3 and Level 5 Twisted-Pair ,
Cat5e and Cat6 ,
Coaxial Cable ) and also
Fire Alarm and Security Cable .
