What Is UL 1015 Hook-up Wire?

UL 1015 is a single conductor polyvinyl chloride (PVC) insulated hook-up wire that is suitable for use on voltages of 600 volts AC and 750 volts DC. You may use UL 1015 wire for the internal wiring of appliances, including control panels and electronic equipment. Allied Wire and Cable's UL 1015 appliance wiring material has a maximum working temperature rating of 105 degrees Celsius. You can use this wire in oil at temperatures up to 80 C. Most types also conform with the Canadian Standards Association TEW appliance wiring standard.

UL 1015 Lead Wire Characteristics

What type of gauge and conductor configurations does UL 1015 hook-up wire have?

AWC offers UL 1015 lead wire in a range of sizes from 26 American Wire Gauge up to 10 AWG. It's available in solid and stranded options. You can specify UL 1015 hook-up wire with bare (B) or tinned (T) copper conductors, as indicated on the part number.

What type of insulation does UL 1015 wire have?

The wire insulation is extruded thermoplastic PVC. The minimum insulation thickness is 30 mils (0.030 inches). PVC insulation has good abrasion resistance and resists most oils, acids, and alkalis. UL 1015 PVC insulated wire has good flame-resistant properties and meets the requirements of the UL VW-1 vertical flame test.

What are common applications of UL 1015 hook-up and lead wire?

You can use UL 1015 wire for AC and DC appliance and control panel wiring. It's rated at 600 volts AC and 750 volts DC. The wire is relatively stiff due to its thicker insulation, especially when specified with a solid conductor. The wire's good temperature rating allows its use indoors and outdoors, and you can use this wire in oil at up to 80 C.

Dual Rated Wires

Several UL 1015 wires have dual UL ratings. These include UL 1230, UL 1032, and Machine Tool Wire (MTW). Note that certain specifications differ, and it's essential to select the correct wire when working to UL standards.

UL 1230 Wire

UL 1230 hook-up wires have similar ratings to UL 1015 wires. Their maximum voltage is 600 volts with the same maximum rated temperature of 105 C. The primary difference is that you can use UL 1230 wires in wet conditions, or in oil, to a maximum temperature of 60 C.

UL 1032

UL 1032 hook-up wire has a lower maximum temperature of 90 C. You can use UL 1032 wire for the internal wiring of appliances and electrical control panels. The wire has a top-rated voltage of 1,000 volts AC and 1,200 volts DC. When used for electronic use, the wire tag may indicate a maximum peak voltage of 3,500 volts.

MTW

Machine tool wire is a category of wire recognized in the National Electrical Code. MTW wire has a dry temperature rating of 90 C and a wet location temperature rating of 60 C. The wire has a maximum voltage rating of 600 volts.
