UL 1061 vs UL 1007

In our This vs. That series, we're comparing (and contrasting) two seemingly similar products. A lot of products seem the same at first glance but can greatly affect the outcome of your next application. Today, we will compare UL AWM 1061 and UL AWM 1007 wires. These wires may be the same category of cable, but they have multiple differences that make them unique. After our side-by-side analysis between these parts, it will be much easier to determine which will be best for your next application.

UL 1061 wire and UL 1007 wire are both UL-rated, single-conductor wires commonly used for the internal wiring of appliances and electronic equipment. They are both classified as hook-up wire and lead wire. They have similar in size, material, and overall construction. However, when you look closely you can see a couple of differences.

Construction

Both of these lead wires are available with solid or stranded copper conductors. However, UL 1007 typically comes with tinned copper conductors while UL 1061 can be bare or tinned. They are also made with different insulation materials—UL 1061 comes with SR-PVC insulation and UL 1007 comes in PVC insulation, both of which are extruded. The most noticeable construction difference between UL 1061 and UL 1007, aside from the insulation material, is the insulation thickness, which affects the overall weight and size.

Ratings and Approvals

The electrical specifications of UL 1061 and UL 1007 don’t vary at all; both have a maximum voltage of 300V and comparable temperature ranges. Both wires also pass the UL VW-1 Flame test. Due to their construction, these hook-up wires can often be found as dual rated with other UL Styles, CSA Styles, and even Mil-Spec styles. Allied Wire and Cable carries the following versions:

UL 1061 UL1007
Max. Temperature Rating 80°C 80°C
Max. Voltage 300V 300V
Dual UL Rating UL Style 10002 (105°C) UL Style 1569 (105°C)
CSA Style CSA Type SR-PVC CSA TR-64 (90°C)
Mil-Spec Style Mil-W-16878/1 Type B (105°C, 600V)(depending on size and stranding) N/A

A dual rating can extend some of the specifications of a lead wire. For example, on the sizes where our UL Style 1007 wire is dual rated with UL 1569, it can be rated to 105°C when used in an application where UL approval is required. When the dual-rated UL 1061 wire is used in a mil-spec environment, it rated at 600V instead of 300V.

If you are unsure about what cable you’ll need in order to meet the needs of your application, consult with a qualified engineer or with one of Allied’s knowledgeable sales reps.
