The Countdown 'til Kickoff Begins

Allied's Pick 'Em Challenge

With the 2015 NFL season quickly approaching, football fanatics and sports enthusiasts all over are anticipating the start of the league's 96th season. Combining the gutsy moves teams made in the offseason with the controversy and noteworthy moments of the 2014 season, several questions are surfacing as football followers get ready for fantasy leagues and prize winning pools to begin.

Will Brady and the defending Superbowl champs abide by football inflation regulations? How much money will Marshawn Lynch accumulate in fines before deciding to speak in a press conference? Will the Redskins change their team name? And finally, will Chip Kelly’s offseason rebuilding pay off, or will the birds miss the playoffs after a promising start to the season, leaving fans once again thinking, “there’s always next year?”

Speaking of fresh starts, it’s almost time for a new season of Allied’s Annual Football Pick ‘Em Challenge. Just as in previous years, you pick the winners for each game, and we’ll give out prizes to the participant with the most points.

Similar to last year, there will be overall season prizes as well as weekly prizes, so don’t count yourself out if you have a rough couple of weeks. In addition to the prizes, two of our popular features from last season will also make a return. Just like last year, the Beat the Rep feature will give contestants the opportunity to interact with Allied sales reps so you can learn about their favorite team and who they’ve got their money on for the week. The Sideline Challenge will be back again for its second season as well, and will give you the opportunity to win prizes, even if you aren’t so good at predicting game outcomes.

For more details, and information on how to sign up, visit our Annual Football Pick ‘Em Challenge Page.

Allied's Make-A-Wish Summer Campaign Recap

Make-A-Wish Campaign Recap

Over the last month, Allied partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in order to help grant wishes for children coping with life threatening illnesses. Our relationship with the foundation dates back to the 90’s, so when we heard that they were experiencing a surge in wish applications, we were eager to help.

Throughout the monthlong Make-A-Wish Summer Campaign, AWC customers, vendors, and employees have donated to the cause, raising $3,860. Allied’s original plan was to match every donation dollar for dollar, which would make the total $7,720—an impressive figure! But we decided to round out that amount to an even $10,000, which is the average cost of one full wish. Funding at least one complete wish was very important to us, and we are happy to have played a part in helping to make once in a lifetime dreams come true for the children in need.

We would like to thank everybody who participated in the fundraiser. We greatly appreciate your generosity, and know that the children and families who benefit will too.

Straight From the Drawing Board: A Case Study about Custom Ribbon Cable

Custom Cable Case Study

This custom cable case study comes just in time for us to close the doors on summer. One of our customers who is a manufacturer of LED lighting recently came to us requesting a custom cable to be used in lighted lanais. The customer came to us with a previous design and from there we made it a point to replicate and revamp the custom cable to fit the customer's needs.

We built a custom ribbon cable, a type of cable known for being space efficient and flexible, with the ability to lay flat in tight spaces. Such characteristics are ideal for accent lighting, which was exactly what was needed for the application.

To learn about the specifics of the custom ribbon cable and about the use of cable in lighted verandas, read the full custom cable case study here

Joke of the Month!

A cop pulls over a carload of nuns.

Cop: "Sister, this is a 65 MPH highway -- why are you going so slow?"

Sister: "Sir, I saw a lot of signs that said 22, not 65."

Cop: "Oh sister, that's not the speed limit, that's the name of the highway you're on!

Sister: Oh! Silly me! Thanks for letting me know. I'll be more careful.

At this point the cop looks in the backseat where the other nuns are shaking and trembling.

Cop: Excuse me, Sister, what's wrong with your friends back there? They're shaking terribly.

Sister: Oh, we just got off of highway 119.
