Allied Wire & Cable offers a line of alternative energy cable that now includes solar wire. With the advent of government rebates
and other policies related to using solar energy, solar panels are being utilized more and more each year, to the benefit of the industry and the
environment. Using the proper cables is essential to the installation and upkeep of solar panels. UL has designated style number UL 4704 to properly
standardize Photovoltaic Wire. Allied proudly carries UL 4704 Rated Photovoltaic Wire, as well as USE-2 and THHN wire, which are both widely used in the solar industry for various applications.
Solar Wire Specifications:
UL Rated Photovoltaic Wire is constructed of an XLPE insulated single conductor with a non-integral, sunlight resistant PVC jacket. The conductor is soft annealed, tinned, stranded copper and it has a maximum voltage rating of 600 (UL) or 1000 volts (CSA). Our solar wire can be used to connect both grounded and ungrounded photovoltaic power systems.

USE-2 Wire is another name for RHW/RHH Wire, and has been used in constructing solar panels for years. However, after the NEC added
PV wire to the updated code in 2008, the differences between the two types are important to understand. USE-2 is only to be used
in grounded PV arrays, as underground entrance wire, connecting service terminals, and only up to 90°C wet or dry conditions
whereas PV wire can be used up to 150°C dry and can be used in both ungrounded and grounded PV arrays. The voltage varies between the two types as well,
with USE-2 rated typically at a maximum of 600V.

THHN Wire is a general purpose building wire used in many applications, including solar. It is constructed of bare, soft drawn
copper with PVC insulation and a nylon jacket. It is UL approved for up to 90°C in dry locations. As a general purpose wire, THHN wire should not be used in a solar array where special approved cables like PV wire or USE-2 is required or preferred.
