What Is SJOW Cable?

SJOW cord is a junior portable power cord with two or more conductors intended for heavy-duty indoor and outdoor use. As a junior service cord, it's rated at 300 volts. The cable is flexible and has an oil-resistant insulation and jacket. All SJOW cables supplied by Allied Wire and Cable comply with the more arduous SJOOW specifications.

SJOW Cable Construction

Conductors

SJOW cords have stranded conductors made from pure copper. Available sizes are from 18 to 10 American Wire Gauge (AWG). The number of conductors is two, three, or four.

Insulation

AWC SJOW cables have flexible (EPDM) rubber insulation. Properties of EPDM include good oil, water, chemical, heat, and ultraviolet resistance. Standard insulation colors include white or gray for the neutral conductor and green or green/yellow for the ground conductor.

Jacket

Jacket materials are either (CPE) or neoprene. Both materials have good oil, abrasion, and weather-resistance properties.

SJOW Cable Applications

You can use a SJOW portable service cord to supply power to portable tools and equipment. These include power tools, small motors, and electrical equipment in garages, construction sites, and outdoors. SJOW cord is strong with excellent abrasion, oil, and chemical resistance and is flexible down to minus 40 Celsius. You can use it for heavy-duty applications in all weathers.

Designation of Portable Cables

Each letter in the acronym SJOW, and for that matter the different lettering found on other types of portable cord, has a specific meaning. This is what SJOW means:

  • S: S indicates the cable has a severe heavy-duty rating.
  • J: If J follows S, the cable is for 300 volts. If there's no J, then the S on its own indicates a 600-volt rating, as in SOW.
  • O: This indicates the cord has an oil-resistant jacket.
  • OO: Two O's, as in SJOO indicate that both the insulation and jacket are oil resistant.
  • W: If there's a W at the end of the acronym, the cord is for outdoor use and protected against ultraviolet radiation from the sun and severe weather (rain, moisture, ice, and snow).

Similar Portable Cables

AWC carries a wide range of portable service cords, and you should select the right service cord for your application. Common alternatives include:

  • SOW: This cord is similar to SJOW except that it's rated at 600 volts for supplying 3-phase 480-volt power tools and equipment
  • SO: This is a 600-volt portable cord with an oil-resistant jacket for indoor use only
  • SJO: A 300-volt portable cord with an oil-resistant jacket for indoor use
  • SVT: A V after the S indicates a light-duty 300-volt cord suitable for use with vacuum cleaners and other light-duty indoor applications
