What Is RG220 Coaxial Cable?

RG220 coax cable is a high-voltage cable used in signal transmission and for impulse generators and magnets. This cable type has a solid copper conductor and a large diameter solid low-density polyethylene dielectric material providing insulation capabilities for up to 14,000 volts. The shield is a copper wire braid covered by a polyvinyl chloride jacket. RG220 coaxial cable has a characteristic impedance of 50 ohms and an attenuation factor of approximately 7.7 decibels per 100 feet at a frequency of 3 GHz. Allied Wire and Cable also supply RG220 to the Mil-C-17/81-0001 standard.

RG220 Coaxial Cable Construction

AWC sources RG220 cable manufactured to tight tolerances using high-quality materials that withstand sustained use at 14,000 volts.

Conductor

This coaxial cable uses a pure annealed copper inner conductor. The solid conductor has a diameter of 0.26 inches (6.6 millimeters).

Dielectric

The dielectric is solid low-density polyethylene. Its overall diameter is approximately 0.91 inches (23.1 mm).

Outer Conductor or Shield

The outer conductor is a closely wound braid made from 30 American Wire Gauge pure copper wire.

Jacket

RG220 cable has a black flexible PVC-IIA jacket. PVC-IIA is ultraviolet stabilized and won't deteriorate in the sunshine. It's known as non-contaminating PVC, has a 20-year life, and is suitable for direct burial in the ground.  

Joining RG220 Cables

When using RG220 cables for high-voltage applications, it's essential to use the correct connector design. The connectors for these cable types aren't suitable for mass production and must be checked individually. Depending on the application, machining of the polyethylene insulation may be necessary together with the use of high-quality epoxy to prevent air bubbles in the connector. Mil-C-17/81-0001 Coaxial Cable

The military specification equivalent of RG220 is Mil-C-17/81-0001 coaxial cable. While almost identical to RG220, military specification coaxial cable manufacturing requires adherence to rigorous standards that guarantee performance in arduous applications.  

RG220 Cable Applications

You can use RG220 cable for high-frequency applications up to 3 GHz and voltages up to 14,000 volts. MIL-Spec RG220 is sweep tested to 1 GHz. The use of a PVC-IIA non-contaminating jacket means you can bury RG220 cables. The European Council for Nuclear Research, better known by its French abbreviation CERN, first used RG220 cables and specially developed coaxial connectors for firing 30 KV pulsed magnets at its Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in 2008.
