UL 3214 vs UL 3231

UL 3214 and UL 3231 wires are part of Allied Wire & Cable’s collection of High-Temperature wires. These wires are designed to withstand brutal temperatures and are fairly universal in their applications. High-temperature wires are suitable for use in commercial and industrial environments, as well as in domestic applications like household ovens and drying equipment. UL 3214 and 3231 wires share some similarities but also some differences in their specifications.

What is UL 3214 Wire?

The UL 3214 wire is designed to be highly flexible due to its silicone rubber insulation, while also possessing an enormous amount of strength and durability. Some of the recommended industrial applications for UL 3214 include motors, lighting fixtures, internal combustion engines, and mercury switch leads. In a more domestic setting, the applications include whole sealed cooking appliances, lighting equipment, computers, therapeutic and electronic devices. This construction allows for a uniform, flexible, concentric, quality construction. We distribute many Belden Hook-Up Wires that meet UL Style 3214.

What is UL 3231 Wire?

Like UL 3214, UL 3231 is also designed to be flexible and highly durable. As well as having good electrical properties, UL 3231 wires also have good chemical resistance, do not contain any chlorine or other halogens, and are fungus resistant. Industrial applications for UL 3231 are the wiring of electrical equipment, usually found in hazardous locations where temperature resistance is imperative. However, it can also be found in domestic settings, such as clothes dryers and other household appliances. UL 3231 is also found in the medical industry and is primarily found in ventilators. Many of our SF-2 and SFF-2 Wires meet UL Style 3231.

As you can see, UL 3231 Wire and UL 3214 Wire are fairly similar in construction and applications, but they do have some differences that one must take into consideration when making a purchase. Many of the UL 3231 and UL 3214 wires we offer are also CSA AWM approved. They are also applicable as a high-temperature lead wire or building wire. Common applications include motos, appliances, lighting fixtures, and electronic leads.

If you’re unsure about what cable you’ll need in order to meet the needs of your application, consult with one of Allied’s knowledgeable sales reps by submitting an RFQ. You can also learn more about High-Temperature Wires through our FAQ page.
