ANSI/NEMA HP 8 2013

10/29/2013

What's new in ANSI/NEMA HP 8-2013?

A reference to ANSI/NEMA WC 67-2012 Standard for Uninsulated Conductors Used in Electrical and Electronic Applications was added and some internal references were removed.

HP 8 Standard Summary

The scope defines specific requirements for cross-linked, modified polyolefin insulated solid and stranded wire designed for the internal wiring of high-reliability electrical and electronic equipment. It covers 600 V (Types LS, ZHDM, ZHDH, and ZH) and 1000 V (Type ZHX) wire and permits continuous conductor temperature ratings of -40°C to 90°C, 105°C, or 125°C with either tin-coated or silver-coated conductors. These hook-up wire types are used when the following attributes are required:

  • Moderate temperature resistance
  • Low-temperature resistance
  • Good dielectric constant (Type ZHDM and ZHDH)
  • Moderate dielectric constant (Type LS)
  • Good flexibility and flex life when stranded conductors are used
  • Solder iron resistance for easier solder terminations without potential damage
  • Low smoke (Types LS, ZHDM, ZHDH, ZH, ZHX)
  • Zero halogen (Types ZHDM, ZHDH ZH, ZHX)
  • Low toxicity (Types LS, ZHDM, ZHDH, ZH, ZHX)
  • Low acid gas generation (Types LS, ZHDM, ZHDH, ZH, ZHX)

Recommended Uses of Wire Types

Type LS replace M16878/36 and is intended for use in 600 V, medium temperature applications.

Type ZHDM and ZHDH contains zero halogens and is intended for use in 600 V or fewer signal applications where a good dielectric constant is required to meet the specific electrical properties in low temperature (90°C) applications.

Type ZH is also halogen-free and is intended for use in 600 V, medium temperature (125°C) applications.

Type ZHX is intended for use in 1000 V, medium temperature (125°C) applications, and contains zero halogens.

Part Identification Number (PIN)

Understanding the breakdown of a part number can tell you a lot about the part itself. This is how and HP8 part number is structured:

HP8—(Type)-(Conductor material)(AWG)(Strands)(Color)

The type will indicate the kinds of attributes listed in the section above, but by consulting the four charts below, you can also determine the part's conductor material, AWG size, stranding, and colors. For example, the breakdown of part number HP8ZHX-BDB tells you that it is Type ZHX, Tin-Coated Copper, 26 AWG, and 7 strands.
