Automotive primary wires like TXL, SXL, and GXL are the most common type of wire used in automotive applications. They are small and have a smooth outer surface, making them ideal for small applications and for being pulled through wire looms. The most commonly used automotive primary wire used in engine compartments is TXL wire.
TXL wire is a thin wall, stranded single conductor wire with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. It is a primary wire for automotive applications, often used where small outer diameter and lightweight are needed. TXL wire has a 50V voltage rating and has a temperature range of -51C to +125C, making it suitable for use in applications exposed to a wide range of temperatures. These wires come in a wide range of gauge sizes and are often available as small as 22 AWG.
Our Custom TXL Wire Solution
One customer in the automotive industry reached out to Allied Wire and Cable to help design a custom TXL wire. Our custom cable experts worked closely with the customer and were able to design and manufacture a TXL wire that perfectly matched the needs of the application.
For this application, one conductor would not provide enough power. Instead, four thin wall TXL wires with 20 AWG conductors were combined under one cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) jacket. This extra power ensured the longevity of the application. It also had to meet various specifications, including the SAE J1128 spec. The SAE J1128 standard covers low voltage primary wires designed for use in electrical systems.
One of the largest customizations for this cable was the colors used. The wires were all insulated with different colors-- red, green, blue, and black. They were then combined under a black jacket. Since each conductor was a different color, the installation process was easier and faster.
From automotive primary wire to battery cables and transit cables, Allied Wire and Cable is your custom cable expert. If you are looking for a custom cable that requires more power or different colors than standard cable, Allied Wire and Cable can help. No customizations are too small or too big for our custom cable experts. To get in touch with one of our knowledgeable sales representatives, visit our Custom Cable Design Center!
