UL 3173 Hook-up Wire construction

Conductor

UL 3173 lead wire uses stranded conductors made up of multiple strands of 30 AWG tinned and soft annealed copper wire. Tinned copper wire has excellent solderability and crimping characteristics. Additionally, the tinned copper wire resists high-temperature oxidation and has an extended service life.

Insulation

The wire has extruded cross-linked polyethylene insulation with a minimum average thickness of 30 mils. XLPE insulation has a maximum temperature rating of 125 degrees Celsius and is a flame-retardant thermoset material that does not deform when heated. The wire has no jacket.

UL 3173 Wire Applications

Applications for UL 3173 wire include wiring of appliances, hook-up wire in transformers, coil leads, motor lead wires, high-temperature luminaires, electrical control panels, electronic equipment, and control panels. A secondary application for UL 3173 wires with a diameter of 14 AWG is as switchboard (SIS) wiring in terms of NEC Article 310, Table 310,104(A). Note, that in this application, the maximum allowable temperature is 90 C.

UL 3173 wire has a maximum temperature rating of 125 C. Many sizes also meet the requirements for SIS wire for use in electrical switchboards according to NEC Article 310. SIS wires may have solid or stranded conductors and wire diameters between 4 AWG and 4 AWG. The maximum working temperature of SIS wire is 90°C
