Collegeville, PA (December 12, 2018)— Allied Wire and Cable is a pioneer among wire and cable product manufacturers and distributors in meeting the stringent specifications outlined in NIST SP 800-171 standards. Becoming compliant with NIST SP 800-171 standards is a reflection of Allied Wire and Cable’s longtime commitment to embracing the latest cybersecurity protocols. Keeping up with the latest cybersecurity protocols ensures the company provides its customers with the ultimate safeguard measures.

The Department of Defense has mandated the implementation of taut cybersecurity practices among third-party providers and maintained it would sever ties with companies that do not meet its requirements. These requirements are far-reaching. Allied Wire and Cable would have to meet NIST SP 800-171 standards not only to provide government entities with wire and cable products but to provide such products to a manufacturer that produces parts for a defense contractor, for example. Some suggest NIST SP 800-171 standards might influence other industries, many of which have been beset by security failures, putting customers’ private information at risk.

To meet NIST SP 800-171 standards, Allied Wire and Cable has established a separate data environment conforming to DFARS 252.204-7012 standards. These standards provide assurance to governments and vendors that Allied Wire and Cable protects sensitive Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Covered Defense Information (CDI) through rigorous storage methods and access limitations.

NIST SP 800-171 stands for National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication (NIST SP) 800-171. NIST SP 800-171 governs Controlled Unclassified Information in nonfederal information systems and organizations. It comprises standards defining how to safeguard and distribute material that is categorized as sensitive but not classified. NIST SP 800-171 was developed after the Federal Information Security Management Act was passed in 2003, giving rise to numerous security standards and recommendations. It was brought about to tighten security in the wake of breaches and to ensure unclassified nonfederal information is uniform and protected.

NIST SP 800-171 compliances took effect December 31, 2017, for government agencies. Affected companies and agencies must review and notate their compliance in managing sensitive information in several ways. These requirements may be used to reject companies that do not adhere. Before the launch of NIST SP 800-171, companies handled data safeguarding and disposal in their own ways. With inconsistent standards, challenges and security concerns arose when information needed to be shared, particularly among several companies.

Allied Wire and Cable’s adherence to NIST SP 800-171 standards help ensure that the company safeguards CUI and CDI and that suppliers meet an adequate level of cyber-incident reporting.

Under the NIST SP 800-171 umbrella exist 14 groups of controls that Allied Wire and Cable ensures that CUI and CDI are maintained with specific customer data. These controls encompass access control, awareness and training, audit and accountability, configuration management, identification and authentication, incident response, maintenance, media protection, personnel security, physical protection, risk assessment, security assessment, system and communications protection, and system and information integrity.
