Philadelphia, PA, May 15, 2012 – Allied Wire & Cable is proud to be the presenting sponsor for the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk, which benefits CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, a national non-profit which funds children’s cancer research.

On Sunday, May 20th, hundreds from the Philadelphia area will gather in Franklin Square to participate in the CureSearch Walk, which benefits CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. The event is designed to celebrate, honor, and remember local children and families affected by children’s cancer, and to raise money for children’s cancer research.

Allied Wire & Cable will be a presenting sponsor at the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk, complete with an official check presentation to take place the morning of the event. Allied donated more than $13,000 to CureSearch as part of its Charity Week back in December.

"Progress has been made in children’s cancer research over the years, but more money is needed to fund research to develop new and improved treatment options for the more than 40,000 children undergoing cancer treatment, and the 13,500 children diagnosed each year," said Julie Puzzo, Senior Vice President at CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. "We must rely on private citizens and support from Allied Wire & Cable and our other sponsors to help us raise every possible dollar for children’s cancer research. We are excited that the people of Philadelphia are joining the CureSearch Walk to support our efforts."

Money raised through events like the CureSearch Walk, and Allied Wire & Cable’s donation, provides children with cancer the chance to receive world-class treatment and care at hospitals close to home, including St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Both hospitals are members of the Children’s Oncology Group, the nation’s largest children’s cancer research collaborative. It also supports the research done behind the scenes, to benefit children facing cancer today and in the future.

Each year, Allied designates one week in December as Charity Week, during which a percentage of all sales is donated to a charity nominated by Allied employees and voted on by Allied customers. While an Allied employee, Stephanie Thomas recommended CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, which was then chosen by Allied customers the main beneficiary of Allied’s Charity Week.

Thomas has a special reason to support CureSearch. She explains, “My son Michael died when he was just two years old from Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT), a rare cancer of the central nervous system. The money CureSearch raises goes towards finding a cure for all kinds of childhood cancer so that no parent has to deal with the loss of a child.”

The CureSearch Walk will open with a balloon ceremony to honor the memory of the children who lost their battles with cancer. Following the moment of reflection, children in treatment and children who have survived the disease will be recognized in a medal ceremony before leading the walk around Franklin Square.

Allied Wire & Cable is honored to be part of the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk on May 20th, and is proud to support CureSearch for Children’s Cancer in honor of Stephanie and Michael Thomas.
