Marine, Pleasure Boat & Shipbuilding FAQs
What is Marine Cable?
Marine cable is a cable, normally brake cable or general circuit wiring, used in marine applications. Because of their exposure to water, these cables are constructed to be resistant to water and corrosion. Generally, they are made with a tinned copper conductor and a PVC jacket.
What types of Marine Cable do Allied Wire and Cable stock?
We carry three different types of marine cable:
- Flat Multi-conductor Marine Cable
- GPTM (Bare Copper)
- GPTM (Tinned Copper)
Does Marine Cable function at the same temperature in both wet and dry conditions?
GPTM (Bare Copper) marine wire and GPTM (Tinned Copper) marine wire can work in temperatures up to 105 degrees Celsius in wet and dry conditions. Flat Multi-Conductor Marine Cable can function at up to 105 degrees Celsius in dry conditions and up to 75 degrees Celsius in wet conditions.
How is a Shipboard Cable used?
A shipboard cable can be used for power, communication, control, lighting, electronic, instrumentation, and special-purpose applications. Allied Wire and Cable carries three configurations of shipboard cable, all of which meet MIL-spec standards
What are the M24640 and M24643 MIL-spec standards?
These Mil-Specs were developed in response to flammability, smoke, and toxicity concerns. They are meant to provide extra safety measures for people and equipment aboard naval ships. The Navy requires that cables meeting these specifications be used on all new ship builds as well as in all modernization projects.
The M24640 specification specifically refers to the lightweight, low-smoke shipboard cables. These emit little smoke and can be used to reduce the drag of unnecessary weight on the ship. The M24643 specification specifically refers to low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) shipboard cables. These do not emit toxic fumes when in contact with fire and also emit little smoke.
What is the NAVSEA Coax Cable?
They are LSZH coaxial cables used for emitting radio/high frequencies. NAVSEA coax cables are low in toxicity and durable due to their excellent flexibility and abrasion resistance. These cables meet the M17 specification and are fit for use on naval ships.
