UL 1028

What is UL 1028 Wire?

UL 1028 is a MTW/TEW hook-up wire. This wire features a bare or tinned copper conductor with PVC insulation. It is moisture-resistant and passes the VW-1 flame test. UL 1028 is suitable for use in the wiring of machine tools, appliances, control cabinets, electronic circuits, and switchboards. It has a temperature range of 105°C and a voltage rating of 600V.

What is the VW-1 flame test?

There are different types of flame tests that are used for different type of materials, and the VW-1 flame test is a flame test specifically for wire and cable products. The VW-1 flame test evaluates the flame resistance of a wire by exposing the wire to direct flame and then measuring the length of time that the wire burns; along with the amount of time it takes for the flame to extinguish. The VW-1 flame test ensures that UL 1028 wire and cable products are able to be used reliably in critical hook up wire applications such as in aircraft or automotive equipment.

What are the differences between UL 1028 wire and UL 1015 wire?

The main difference between UL 1028 wire and UL 1015 is the type of insulation used. UL 1028 wire has flame-retardant insulation that can pass flame tests such as the VW-1 flame test, while UL 1015 wire commonly utilizes PVC insulation providing resistance to moisture and chemicals. Another core difference are the applications that the wires are commonly used for. UL 1028 wire is typically used in communications, signaling, and control systems while UL 1015 wire is used as general purpose internal wire for appliances.
