Looking for Dog Fence Wire?
Electronic dog fences are becoming more and more popular instead of leashes and unsightly traditional fences. If you're a DIYer, the idea of equipping your yard with an electronic fence to keep your dogs safe is great.
But how do you make one? What do you even use?
There are several brands of electronic fencing you can find in the market, and some will provide you with a certain amount of wire to start. But what if yours doesn't? Or you have a larger yard to cover? No matter what brand system you have, the same type of wire can be used.
These are the most important things to remember when choosing wire for an electric dog fence:
- It must be a single insulated solid wire, meaning only one solid conductor surrounded by insulation. You can't use a cable with 2 conductors, shielding, or coaxial cable. A stranded wire will work as dog fence wire, but this can lead to strands breaking during installation so a solid conductor is best.
So What's the Best Option to Use for Dog Fence Wire?
The best type of wire to use for electronic dog fences is TFN Building and Fixture Wire. It is made with a single, soft drawn bare copper conductor and PVC insulation with a Nylon jacket. It is rated for use indoor or outdoor use. In laymen's terms, that means a general-purpose wire used in machine tools, appliances and control circuits. It also means that it is used for a lot of applications, including dog fences. The two most common gauges to choose from are 16 AWG and 18 AWG.
-
16 Gauge is the thickest option with the strongest signal, so it will support the widest boundary size. But it can be more expensive and less flexible.
-
18 Gauge is thinner, and more flexible than the 16 gauge, but can still carry a strong signal.
The best wire to use for dog fences is the 18 gauge wire: TFN 18 1, which is the specific part number for solid, single (1) conductor 18 gauge (AWG) TFN fixture or building wire.
Can I Purchase Any Brand of Wire to Replace Damaged Sections to my Existing Fence?
Any single insulated wire, rated for outdoor use can be used. It doesn't matter what brand it is, as long as the wire is rated to withstand the environment you will be putting it in. However, there is an important rule of thumb to remember when selecting replacement wire for an existing dog fence: choose the gauge you already have if you can, or get as close as possible. While you can splice different gauges together, the fence boundary won't be consistent all the way around since thicker wire has wider boundaries.
