What does UL Stand For?

UL stands for UL Enterprise and is a not-for-profit product-safety testing and certification organization. UL was originally established in 1894 as a bureau under the National Board of Fire Underwriters known as the "Underwriters' Electrical Bureau." For the majority of the 20th century it was commonly known as "Underwriters Laboratories" before it became the parent company of a for-profit company known as "UL, LLC" in 2012 that took over the Product Testing and Certification business. In 2022, the UL Organization rebranded as 3 separate entities: UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement, and UL Solutions. These three separate UL entities now form the "UL Enterprise".

UL is approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to test and certify the safety of over 70 different product categories using more than 30 standards for safety. Every wire and cable in our UL Catalog meets the public safety requirements designated by the UL. You can learn more about UL Solutions by visiting their site https://www.ul.com/.
