vntc tray cable

What is VNTC Cable?

VNTC stands for Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable and is the most common kind of tray cable. It is a type of instrumentation cable. As the name indicates, this tray cable is insulated with nylon-coated PVC. VNTC tray cable can also be referred to as THHN/PVC when the insulation on the inners or component wires in the cable is Thermoplastic High Heat Nylon and TFFN/PVC when the insulation is Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture Nylon.

What is VNTC Cable Used For?

With its sturdy make and adaptability in wet or dry environments, VNTC cable has many different applications. It can be installed in a variety of conduits, ducts, raceways, and cable tray systems. VNTC cable is flame retardant, sunlight resistant, and can be used in hazardous environments and direct burial applications. It is also permitted for use as exposed runs by the NEC when it has the -ER rating.

VNTC tray cable is ideal for industrial and factory settings but can be used for much more. VNTC is rated to 600V and has a temperature rating of 75°C in wet applications and 90°C in dry applications. This cable also has a good cold bend and is cold impact resistant, as well as oil and chemical resistant.

Construction

VNTC cable can range in size from 22 AWG to 750 MCM and can have between 2-50 conductors, including multi-pairs and multi-triads. The VNTC cable also has flame-retardant PVC insulation covered with nylon. These component wires adhere to their own ratings. Only cables 14 AWG and larger can be THHN or THWN.

TFFN is the stranded (or flexible — that’s where we get the extra F) version of TFN, and they are both used in fixture sizes, 16-18 AWG. Typically, there is no shielding on VNTC cable, however, if shielding is required for your application, aluminum mylar foil with a drain wire is the most common choice. VNTC cable is protected by a PVC jacket. To learn more about the construction of VNTC, check out full tray cable specs.

VNTC cable is just one example of a tray cable. There are many other types of tray cable, and you can learn about them here.
